Abstract
Objectives: This study was designed to examine the effects of Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) & CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) on the carrageenan-induced arthritic rats in terms of the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-febrile activities.

Materials and Methods: Each of the 7 rats was divided into a normal, control, and sample group for the experiment conducted to test the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and the anti-febrile activity. Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) was administered orally to the sample group and normal saline was administered to the normal and the control group. CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) was administered orally to the sample group and normal saline was administered to the normal and the control group. Arthritis was induced by injecting 0.1§¢ of 1% carrageenan per rat and Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) & CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) was administered after 30 minutes from the injection. The change of edema in Carrageenan-induced Arthritic Rats¡¯ Paws was measured after 1 hour and 5 hours from the injection of carrageenan with Plethysmometer(7150, UGO BASILE, Italy) by the method of Winter. Writhing syndrom was measured with Tail flick unit(UGO BASILE, Italy) in the experiments conducted to test the analgesic activity. The temperature was measured with Telethermometer after 5 hours from the injection of carrageenan on the rats¡¯ paw and the rectum.

Results: 1. In the sample groups, the increase rates of edema were effectively controlled compared with those of the control group.
2. In the sample groups, WBC, Neutrophil & Lymphocyte segment were effectively controlled compared with those of the control group, and GOT, ALP were decreased and GPT was increased compared with those of the control group but not signigicant.
3. In the sample groups, while the analgesic effect was shown in the CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) adminitered group, it was not in the Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) adminitered group.
4. In the sample groups, the temperature on the paw and the rectum was decreased effectively compared with the control group.

Conclusion: It was recognized that Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) & CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) decreased edema, WBC, GOT, and ALP of the carrageenan-induced arthritic rats, controlled Neutrophil & Lymphocyte segment effectively, and showed the significant effectiveness in terms of the anti-febrile activity.
It was recognized that Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) & CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) were considerably effective in terms of the anti-inflammatory activity.
It was recognized that CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) was more effective than Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) in terms of the analgesic activity.
According to the above results, it can be concluded that Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) & CL added to Soopung-Hwan(Soufenwan) treated the carrageenan-induced arthritic rats effectively in terms of the anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-febrile activities.
It is suggested that an additional study on side effects of the two prescriptions be conducted since properties of each element of them are known as acute and severe.
